Crown Lengthening Surgery

Surgical reshaping of the gum and bone level to expose more natural tooth structure — for restorative treatment or aesthetic correction of a gummy smile.

What is it?

Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that reshapes the gum — and, where needed, the bone beneath it — to expose more of the natural tooth. It’s used either to prepare a tooth for a restoration or to correct a gummy smile.

What causes it?

A short clinical crown from wear or fracture, a tooth broken below the gumline, or gum tissue that covers more of the tooth than is proportionate can all create the need for lengthening — the first two are restorative reasons, the last is aesthetic.

Types of treatment

Restorative crown lengthening
Exposing sound tooth structure ahead of a crown or other restoration.
Aesthetic crown lengthening
Gingival recontouring to balance tooth-to-gum proportion, including gummy smile correction.
